My kids and I like museums. We didn't like that there was no one-stop shop to find everything that was happening at museums around us, or where we might be travelling, so we could decide what we wanted to see. So my daughter, who's just finishing up her history degree, and maybe likes museums even more than I do, and I got together and created a site for that. We decided it would be useful if it could help us plan trips around museums as well, so we added that feature. My kids and I also really like exploring the world on road trips, so we added a road-trip planner as well, which naturally led to including the natural points of interest we'd be passing along the way.
As of this writing, the site has 22k venues, 27k exhibits and events, and 21k natural POIs. It gets a little bigger every day, which is pretty cool. You should check it out.

My son is an Enviromental Science/Environmental Law student. He and I got to talking about how we could use a lot of what we'd already done for the other site to help connect people who want to help with environmental causes, so we're building a site for that as well. It's more of a work-in-progress, but hopefully it'll turn into something really useful with a little more effort.
